e- Outline the processes and consequences of soil degradation.
- "Soil degradation is the decline of soil quality or quantity. Soil degradation results from changes to biological, geological or chemical components of a soil." (Process)

BIOLOGICAL
"Losses of soil micro-organisms, removal of dead organic matter or reductions in stabilizing plant communities. " (Process)

GEOLOGICAL

"Changes to physical structure and conditions such as drainage or permeability." (Process)

CHEMICAL
"Increase, changes or additions leading to acidification, calcification, toxicity, nutrient reduction or increasing salinity." (Process)

Factors affecting oil degradation

  1. Climatic conditions (wind and water, drought)
  2. Biological interactions (grazing)
  3. Human impacts (population growth, farming techniques)

Consequences of soil degradation

-Goes beyond loss of fertile land

- Increases pollution and sedimentation in streams and rivers

- causes declines in fish and other water species

- Less able to hold on water which causes floods

HEALTHY SOIL IS A VERY IMPORTANT CONCERN FRO FARMERS MORE THAN TO ANYONE IN THE COMMUNITY, THEIR LIVES DEPEND ON WELL MANAGED AGRICULTURE AND FERTILE LAND

Soil degradation happens when our activities (direct or indirect)  cause the soil to become less healthy or less vigorous to a a worst state.

SOIL degradation includes:

Soil salinity

- the accumulation of salt in the soil

- limits plant growth

Compaction

- Soil particles pact together

- Increases soil density and reduced pore space

- Trafficking (by animals and vehicles) primary cause of this

- Cultivation is also a primary cause of compaction

Waterlogging

Water saturates the soil. happens because of reduction in infiltration and transmission of water into soil

Acidification

- Decrease of pH in the soil

- Reduction in plant vigour

SOLUTIONS

By using land sustainably, the impacts of agriculture and livestock are reduced, by doing this you prevent soil degradation and erosion and the loss of valuable land to becoming a desert.

f- Outline soil conservation measures
taken by your country.

Since wood is the principal energy source for most of Haitians, almost 75% of the nations energy consumption is from this material then it relates a lot to soil degradation because trees need soil in order to grow, they need healthy and fertile land.

- Since people rely on wood, it has lead to deforestation and it is said approximately 6,000 hectares of soil are lost each year due to erosion

- From these calculations of lost soil due to erosion it is possible to say that Haiti hasn't taken an soil conservation measures, until today deforestation is still a problem therefore erosion and soil degradation is as well

- Many things can be done but they haven't, also after the earthquake there was major problems due with the soil and earth

In the picture below it is obvious the difference between Dominican republic and Haiti, deforestation is clear in Haiti
