a- Outline the different energy resources used by your country. Include a recent pie chart.

Haiti has a population of around
9,801,664 people
- In this country, the energy resources are limited

- Before the earthquake, Haiti's energy basically relied upon
"petroleum and unstable electrical generating stations to provide electricity" (Haiti's energy)

- After the earthquake there is not much information of what's been going on with energy but it is known that this area needs help in terms of were it gets its energy from

- Around
12.5% of the population have access to electricity,

-
Port-au-Prince is the area that has the greatest level of access, since its a poor country, not many people have access to electricity

- In Haiti there is a national electricity company called "
Electricité d'Haiti" which produces energy for this small percent of people

-
In 2006 this company reported that its total installed capacity of energy was 270 MW of which

-------70% of the energy came from diesel oil-fired thermal and 30% from hydroelectric.
----------

- The rest that don't have access to electricity which are the majority use
wood as their primary energy source
75% of Haiti's energy consumption comes from wood

- Due to this reliance on wood, deforestation is a big problem in Haiti

- It's important to know Haiti does not produce oil, nor natural gas, nuclear power reproduction nor coal and the thermo-electric plants run on imported petroleum.

- Haiti imported around 14 thousand barrels of oil per day in 2008

- Haitians also use charcoal for cooking

ADVICE

As Haiti's sustainbaility adviser, I would suggest taking more care of forests lands, now more than ever forests are becoming smaller in Haiti therefore they should consider a solution like using replenish able or renewable sources of energy as wind and solar power, this could be possible and it would let trees and forests grow in Haiti because deforestation is a big problem in this nation
OF THAT 25% OF OTHER ENERGY RESOURCES we can infer about 30% IS HYDROELECTRIC AND 70% IS DIESEL OIL-FIRED THERMAl as well as other energy sources

b- Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of two contrasting energy sources.
ENERGY FROM WOOD/WOOD FUEL
...
ADVANTAGES
 - Trees grow again and again and replace older or removed trees therefore it is a renewable and recyclable energy source which is good

- Cheaper than other energy sources

- Already an available fuel
...
DISADVANTAGES

- By cutting trees, you are leaving humans with less and less oxygen, it is not an eco-friendly energy source

-Wood, can be difficult to transport and store

- Wood creates ashes when burned, which later have to be disposed or thrown away somewhere which is not eco-friendly either

HYDROELECTRIC ENERGY
...
ADVANTAGES

- Doesn't produce green-house gases

-Dams control flooding downstream in times of high rainfall and snowmelt

- Costs for hydroelectricity plants are much lower than for thermal electricity power plants

...
DISADVANTAGES
- Usually in order to built a dam, large populations have to be relocated

- Building a dam is expensive

- Dams affect river ecosystem, many marine animals die trapped in dams

c- Discuss the factors that affect the choice of energy sources adopted by your society

- When a society decides to use an energy source, usually one more than another, the factors that affect this decision is basically based on price and abundance of the resource

- Energy and electricity are needed every day, they are necessary therefore if an energy source is available and abundant the cheaper it will be

- Many Countries don't take in account the effect and damage that that use of that energy source creates to the environment.

- Therefore in a society the factors that affect the choice of energy sources are basically those

- In Haiti, Haitians reach for wood and trees since this is the major resource they have or at least used to have

- They import oil but it's not sufficient and it is expensive so they don't care if their trees are gone some day because they are not conscious of what is going on with their trees and source of oxygen

-Haitians also get a lot of energy from hydroelectric dams, actually only 12.5% of the population get it from dams and not other resources and this is also because other sources are more expensive

d- Explain how the energy resources used in your society changed over time

- There's not much information about the change of energy resources used in Haiti over time especially after the earthquake

-Energy has never been a strong area for Haiti, and since this country is poor they can't pay much for energy resources like oil.

- Energy requires a lot of money even solar panels cost a lot of money therefore it is not easy to simple change the resource of energy and have a new one

- It can be inferred that the data given above about energy resources (wood, hydroelectric, diesel oil-fired thermal) has not changed much since 2006, when the last analysis of energy in Haiti was done
- Also it can be inferred that haitians each year use up a lot of their trees in order to get wood fuel, charcoal or simply energy from wood therefore since the growth of trees is not higher than it's consumption, each year there's less trees, less oxygen but doesn't mean the rate of usage is lower, maybe 75% of the population that got its energy from wood in 2006, today in 2013 still do and maybe even a higher percentage

- Haiti is an undeveloped country with a very low GDP per capita, perhaps one of the poorest countries, so it is not expected to see a major change in their energy resources use

ADVICE
- As mentioned before, there should be innovation and improvement in the area of energy in Haiti, people shouldn't reach for trees because trees are the source of life and breathing, there should be a higher development in the hydroelectric part and Haiti should attain their energy from renewable sources like wind power, solar energy etc. But the big problem is that it is a very poor country and this is why only 12.5% of the population have access to this energy and the rest who don't have the money and status have to get their energy from the wood in the trees.
